This past year, even more than most, we have had a lot to be thankful for here at Oglethorpe, Sturton & Gillibrand. Despite the pressures that all businesses have faced in continuing to navigate the uncertainty and ever changing landscape caused by the Pandemic, we have continued to grow from strength to strength.

With new Partner promotions and key team appointments, during 2021 we grew the firm to its largest ever size. In June, Mark Hutchinson-Lyons and Avelina Wright were promoted to Partners and together with the seven other Partners, continue to help shape the firm’s future direction. Additional strategic appointments across a number of departments, including Wills and Probate, Residential and Commercial Property and Commercial Litigation, further strengthened the capacity and skills base of our busy teams. We now have over 35 legal staff working directly with clients to provide the best possible advice across a range of specialisms and sectors.

Our continued investment in excellence was rewarded by recognition in the Legal 500 publication of three of our core teams – Tax and Estates,  Agriculture, and Commercial Property. Partners Allan Sumner,  Alison Kinder, John Myers and Clare Love each received personal recognition, together with their teams, for the high quality advice they provide to our clients. To echo the words of the publication itself, “you get the feeling that you are dealing with a partner-led practice and your matter matters.”

During a busy year, we also took time out to celebrate the career of our former Senior Partner, David Gillibrand, who retired from the partnership at the end of May. Whilst David may have now escaped Partner’s meetings, he still has an important role to play within the Commercial Litigation team, working alongside Partner David Barnes on a part-time basis. As 2022 will mark David’s 40th year with the firm, we remain grateful for all that he has done and continues to do to guide and nurture the firm and all those who work here.

Partner Sarah Miller, who played a key role in the development and expansion of our Kirkby Lonsdale office, also put down her pen in May to explore new challenges outside of the legal profession. Sarah’s dedication to her clients and to the firm mean that she is greatly missed, but her clients and colleagues are in excellent hands as Sarah is succeeded as Head of the Kirkby Lonsdale Office by Avelina Wright, and in her residential conveyancing practice by Senior Solicitor Claire Dawson.

So as 2021 draws to a close, and we prepare for whatever 2022 may bring, we want to take this time to thank our clients, those professionals who work alongside us, the local business community, friends and family for your continued support.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and our very best wishes for the New Year.
