Training contracts

We offer a fantastic training experience, working with high quality lawyers in a friendly environment. Our overall aim is to give our trainees a good variety of quality work so that they develop their legal skills and find the practice area that best suits their skills and interests.

A normal training contract with us will comprises four ‘seats’, with each one lasting six months.

You will be based in our Lancaster office, undertaking the four six month seats. While trainees are allocated to our Lancaster office there may be an opportunity and depending upon circumstances expectation that you might spend some time in our Kirkby Lonsdale office.

Before you move into each of your four seats, you can express to the training principal a preference as to which practice area you wish to undertake at that time. We try to take these preferences into account to ensure that where possible, each trainee spends time in the seats they are most interested in.

Time will be spent in a mix of Agriculture, Corporate, Commercial Property, Litigation, Family and Private Client. From the beginning of your training programme, we hope you will be surprised at the degree of direct contact you can have with our clients.

Our standard application requirements are a minimum 2:1 degree (or predicted) and good A level results. Our trainees need to have good interpersonal skills, common sense, and the ability to work in a team and under their own initiative. In that way we are similar to every other law firm to which you have also applied; where we are different is that we appreciate that Oglethorpe Sturton & Gillibrand is the sum of its parts and we recognise that as a trainee and beyond you will have a major role to play in our future success. So what we are interested in about you, over and above the usual, is the diversity of experience, strengths and talents that you can bring to the firm to ensure that we can continue to offer our clients the very best legal talent giving the very best legal advice. Tell us about you, we are very interested to know what you could bring to the equation.

During each seat, our trainees have regular review meetings and an end of seat review with their supervisor ensuring that they receive regular, constructive feedback on their progress.
All our trainees attend the Professional Skills Course (PSC) as well as attending further training events to equip them with the necessary skills for being a successful solicitor.

In relation to your final seat, we will seek to establish your preference for qualification and where possible, will arrange your last seat accordingly. We aim to promote details of newly qualified positions in advance of final decisions being made.

Please note – the closing date for 2021 applications is 31st December for training contracts to commence in September 2022.
